Elbe River Fails as Shipping Route Amid Drought Crisis

Germany's Federal Ministry of Transport continues to classify the Elbe as a federal waterway despite persistent low water levels and un-navigability. The river, which relies on natural low-water flow rather than glacial melt like the Rhine, has become increasingly unreliable for shipping. Over 550 kilometers from the Czech border to just before Geesthacht, the Elbe has ceased to function as a dependable transport route. Low-water periods have grown longer and more extreme since the 1990s, with the last decade seeing a sharp escalation. The situation in 2025 is particularly severe. The ministry's insistence on maintaining the waterway status diverts water from the landscape, exacerbating drought conditions in eastern Germany. While the Rhine faces reduced cargo capacity—ships can only load to a third of capacity—the Elbe's crisis is far more advanced yet receives less public attention.
