Echo Yan and Cass Yao Exhibition at Frisson Gallery Explores Bodies and Transformation

Frisson Gallery in New York's Lower East Side is presenting a joint exhibition titled 'Feeding the Load, Regulated Dosage' by artists Echo Youyi Yan and Cass Yao, on view through April 4, 2026. The show features installations and sculptures that examine anatomical instability and domestic systems. Cass Yao's contributions include 'Axis,' a large sculpture resembling intertwined spinal cords with shrunken heads, described by the artist as reflecting evolutionary failure. Yao's 'Anatomy' series presents wall-mounted works that blur boundaries between organic and mechanical forms, suggesting medical waste or undeveloped matter. Echo Yan's pieces focus on domestic objects transformed into uncanny hybrids, such as 'Weresheep,' a coat rack with animal features, and 'Mickey Mouse Clubhouse,' which incorporates a mouse trap. Yan's 'You May Touch the Fence' creates an enclosure within the gallery, while 'The Spinner' depicts an entangled spinning wheel. The exhibition, curated by Rui Jiang, contrasts Yao's surgical, speculative approach with Yan's domestic themes, both exploring how bodies are shaped by their environments. The works address themes of domestication, mutation, and the tension between utility and decay, using materials like epoxy clay, resin, and found objects.
