Early Van Gogh Painting to be Auctioned in Hong Kong Amid Growing Chinese Market

Christie's will auction Vincent van Gogh's early painting 'A Girl in a Wood' in Hong Kong on March 27, with an estimated value between $1.3 million and $2.6 million. The work, created in August 1883 while the artist resided in The Hague, represents a more accessible price point compared to his later French paintings. Recent research by the Van Gogh Museum has adjusted the dating of this canvas, which shares material origins with another forest scene from the same period. This sale highlights the expanding influence of Chinese collectors, who now account for approximately half of Van Gogh's auction purchases. The painting will be publicly displayed in Hong Kong from March 24 leading up to the auction.
