Dutch Artist Frankey Presents 'Lucky Dragon' Installation at Rosewood Hong Kong During Art Basel

Dutch artist Frankey, known for his playful street interventions, has unveiled a new installation titled 'Lucky Dragon' at Rosewood Hong Kong. The work will be on view from March 23 to April 22, 2026, coinciding with Art Basel Hong Kong. Frankey, whose real name is Frank de Ruwe, creates whimsical art that transforms ordinary urban elements into surprising statements. Over his two-decade career, he has produced more than 800 street pieces in Amsterdam and 50 permanent installations worldwide. His practice involves collaborating with designer Piet Boon on indoor projects, including several for Rosewood properties. In an interview, Frankey discussed his creative philosophy, citing Banksy's 'Wall and Piece' as an early influence that showed him how public spaces could serve as canvases. He studied Industrial Design at TU Delft, where he learned to incorporate humor by subverting standard designs. For 'Lucky Dragon,' Frankey drew inspiration from local Hong Kong culture, such as the lucky number eight and dragon imagery, blending these with references from his childhood and pop culture. He emphasized that his goal is to evoke wonder and smiles, whether in street art or luxury hotel settings. Frankey also mentioned his temporary street works, which are designed to be easily removed, contrasting with permanent pieces that allow for more ambitious collaboration. His character 'Benney,' a street cat, has appeared globally and is sold as a plush toy at Rosewood Amsterdam.
