Duke of York's Theatre Renamed After Sir Tom Stoppard

The Duke of York's Theatre in London's West End will be renamed The Tom Stoppard Theatre to pay tribute to the renowned playwright Sir Tom Stoppard, who passed away in November 2025. This decision was revealed by ATG Entertainment, the theatre's owner, as a way to honor one of the most significant figures in British theatre. The change comes after Prince Andrew relinquished his title as Duke of York in October 2025, although ATG did not directly associate the two events. Originally known as the Trafalgar Square Theatre, it became the Duke of York's in 1895 after future King George V. Opened in 1892, it has hosted notable premieres, including JM Barrie's Peter Pan (1904) and performances by Charlie Chaplin (1905). Stoppard's children—Ollie, Barny, Will, and Ed—expressed their appreciation for the honor, noting the West End's significance to their father. Currently, one of Stoppard's plays, Arcadia, is being performed at the venue. Signage updates are expected in the coming months. This renaming follows a letter published in The Stage last autumn from a former actor advocating for the change. Other locations have also distanced themselves from Prince Andrew's titles, such as the Duke of York Stakes, now known as Minster Stakes, and a pub at York station, which has been renamed Line and Whistle.
