Dr. Dori Tunstall's 100-Word Cut: Indigenizing Design with 'Designed to Be Red'

In August, Dr. Dori Tunstall, a design anthropologist and author of 'Decolonizing Design: A Cultural Justice Guidebook', continues her PRINT Magazine series with a 100-word pairing of image and text that examines design's cultural histories and power structures. The piece highlights 'Designed to Be Red: Native American & Indigenous Graphic Works', a book compiled and edited by Brian M. Johnson (Monacan Nation) of Polymode Studio, published by DelMonico Books in 2026. The book contains 159 color pages spanning 200 years of works from 80 tribes and nations. On September 15, the book will be released, and an accompanying exhibition of 100 posters will open at Poster House, officially indigenizing the graphic design canon. Tunstall argues that 'Putting Indigenous First' is the first step in decolonizing design, requiring non-Native persons to clear space for Native American and Indigenous people to indigenize design. The book is described as the first textbook of Native American design sovereignty.
