Don McCullin Releases Final Photo Book 'Vietnam' with Gost Books
Don McCullin, the renowned British war photographer, has published his final monograph, Vietnam, through Gost Books. The book features over 100 black-and-white and 20 colour images, many previously unseen, taken between 1965 and 1972 during the Vietnam War. McCullin, who turns 91 this week, reflects on his career and the futility of war in an interview from his home in Somerset. He discusses his guilt over photographing suffering without intervening, stating, "You can't save a life with a Nikon camera." The book aims to provide an honest insight into war, with captions offering context. McCullin, who covered conflicts from Biafra to Aleppo, expresses concern about the state of photojournalism today, claiming it is dead and replaced by celebrity and fashion coverage. He also notes society's desensitization to violence, partly due to Hollywood's realistic portrayals. Despite his retirement, McCullin has turned to landscape and still life photography, finding solace in nature, and is working on a project with the Vatican photographing Roman sculptures. Vietnam is out now.
