Documentary Reveals Artists' Mixed Feelings on AI

A new documentary lasting 19 minutes, produced by the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP) and debuting on Hyperallergic, showcases the genuine responses of artists and creative professionals regarding generative AI. Directed by Jan Oliver Lucks and inspired by the 2025 Pulse Survey on AI and Work, the film includes an artist attempting to recreate an AI-generated image in her unique style, a designer expressing fears of job loss, and an editorial cartoonist remarking, "AI has no history, it has no soul." The survey gathered over 2,000 responses from graduates of more than 100 U.S. colleges. While 90% voiced skepticism about AI—highlighting environmental and privacy issues—around half reported using it in their work. SNAAP's Senior Research Fellow Joanna Woronkowicz emphasized the "complex reality" of navigating such disruptions. Additionally, a related study by Woronkowicz in Sage Journals examines inequality in AI adoption, questioning who benefits from AI. SNAAP is a nonprofit based at the University of Texas at Austin's College of Fine Arts.
