Documentary Explores Artist James Grashow's Monumental 'The Cathedral' Sculpture

A documentary titled 'Jimmy & the Demons,' directed by Cindy Meehl, examines the creation of a significant wood sculpture by artist James Grashow. The work, called 'The Cathedral,' depicts Jesus carrying a church on his back, with demons surrounding his feet. Grashow, a Jewish sculptor and woodcut artist, was commissioned by a Catholic collector to produce this piece. The film documents the multi-year process of crafting the sculpture, which Grashow views as his life's major achievement. Beyond the artwork's creation, the documentary delves into Grashow's personal life, including his marriage of over five decades to Lesley Grashow, known as Guzzy. It also highlights his career, featuring his whimsical cardboard installations displayed at venues like the Museum of Modern Art and his woodcut prints, such as the cover for Jethro Tull's 1969 album 'Stand Up.' Grashow describes the sculpture as his 'grand finale,' expressing both solemnity and concern about completing it. The demons in the piece reflect his lifelong contemplations on mortality, while the Twelve Apostles include personal touches, like one holding a teddy bear and another resembling a helpful friend. The film is currently showing in theaters.
