Diya Vij, NYC's New Arts Commissioner, Prioritizes Affordability and Accessibility

Diya Vij, who took on the role of commissioner for New York City's Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) in late February, has now spent six months managing the largest municipal arts funding body in the U.S., which supports more than 1,200 organizations. In a recent interview with Gothamist, she underscored the vital role of the arts in enhancing the city's quality of life. With encouragement from Mayor Zohran Mamdani, she successfully negotiated a budget that allocates a record $323 million for the fiscal year 2026-2027. This funding includes a $10 million Cultural Stability Fund aimed at assisting struggling organizations. Vij also mentioned a collaboration with the Theater Development Fund, which offers over 2,000 free Broadway tickets to high school students in NYC. She intends to prioritize individual artists and has conducted town halls to advocate for increased public arts funding.
