DIY Product Video: Lighting and Shooting a Cocktail Shaker at Home

other · 2026-07-18

A photographer created a promotional product video for a cocktail shaker from a well-known culinary brand using limited gear in his dining room. He blacked out windows and used controlled lighting with an Aputure 600 Bicolor LED as key light and two Nanlite 150s as edge lights, all fitted with grids and softboxes. Color temperature was balanced around 2,700–2,900 Kelvin. For motion, he used a motorized 30-inch slider and a turntable to spin the shaker, capturing multiple takes at 120 fps. Tripod shots captured macro details like lemon squeezing and citrus slicing. Overhead shots were taken by placing the tripod on the table. A creative slider setup made it appear the camera tracked a razor blade gliding across packaging, though the camera was stationary and the packaging moved. The project demonstrates that a studio is unnecessary for quality product video; controlling light, adding motion, and using existing gear suffice. The article was published on PetaPixel.
