Dinosaur Jr. Announces New Album 'There Near' with 80s Sound

Dinosaur Jr. will release their sixth album since reuniting 20 years ago, titled 'There Near', on August 28. The album was created in short, intensive sessions over a year. It marks a return to the band's musical roots, featuring the core trio of J Mascis (guitar, vocals), Lou Barlow (bass, vocals), and Murph (drums), with occasional piano and organ from Ken Mauri. Mascis purchased a Boogie MK 1 amplifier, which defined the band's 80s sound, to recapture that era. The band is known for obscure lyrics, and Mascis intends to continue that approach, admitting he often doesn't know what his songs are about. He laments that streaming services like Spotify display lyrics, asking 'Where's the fun in that?' The first single, 'Several got away', is available online with a music video directed by Guy Kozak. The video features two giant fire hands that disintegrate the band members, who eventually reunite in heaven after Mascis takes a detour through hell.
