Digital Heart Replicas Guide Successful Treatment of Ventricular Tachycardia in Clinical Trial

A study released on April 1 in the New England Journal of Medicine reveals that customized 3-D digital models of patients' hearts enhance treatment results for ventricular tachycardia. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University developed these digital twins using MRI scans from ten survivors of heart attacks. These models facilitated the simulation of electrical pathways and the identification of problematic tissue prior to surgery. Ablation procedures were completed in approximately 30 minutes, achieving a 100% success rate in the trial. Eight patients remained free of arrhythmia during an average follow-up period exceeding one year, while two experienced episodes that were managed by defibrillators. Co-author Natalia Trayanova emphasized the technology's practicality, and cardiac electrophysiologist Babak Nazer described it as groundbreaking. Further trials are set to explore additional cardiac conditions.
