cultural-heritage · 2026-09-24

The stone relief created by Diego Rivera at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Mexico City is set for restoration through a partnership between the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (Unam) and the World Monuments Fund (WMF). Funded by the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation from the US embassy, local specialists will undertake the restoration of Rivera's piece, which dates back to 1952. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2007, the stadium showcases remarkable plastic integration. This initiative also encompasses murals by Juan O'Gorman and David Alfaro Siqueiros. The restoration coincides with the 2028 anniversary of the Mexico City Olympics, alongside studies and seminars aimed at enhancing the understanding of these murals.
