Design Studios Transform Mexico City Gym into Monochromatic Denim Environment

Design studios Sulkin Askenazi and Alterego have created SUTURA, an immersive fitness environment in Mexico City where every functional element is wrapped in indigo denim fabric. The project transforms a traditional gymnasium into a unified aesthetic experience, using the textile to soften industrial equipment and create a tactile dialogue between athletic surfaces. The design draws inspiration from minimalist artists like James Turrell and Harry Nuriev, employing light as a sculptural element that interacts with the denim's texture through diffused perimeter illumination. The layout emphasizes curated movement sequences rather than chaotic density, encouraging intentional physical engagement. The monochromatic environment strips away visual distractions, focusing attention inward during training. Despite the soft appearance, the denim application involves rigorous engineering for durability in high-traffic use. The project represents a broader trend merging athletic performance with high-concept aesthetics, similar to recent fitness spaces in Abu Dhabi, Toronto, and Penafiel. SUTURA challenges conventional gym design by elevating functional equipment through material treatment and atmospheric design.
