Desert Dreaming: New Book Explores Residential Architecture in the American Southwest

"Desert Dreaming: Design in the Southwest and Beyond," authored by Jessica Ritz and published by Gibbs Smith, delves into the residential architecture of North America's desert areas, including the Chihuahuan, Mojave, Sonoran, and Great Basin. Retailing for $50, the book examines various styles, from desert modernism to adobe construction, showcasing adaptations to dry climates. In her essay, Ritz underscores the tenacity of those living in desert regions. Notable projects highlighted are Sombra de Santa Fe by DUST, Shapeshifter House by OPA, and a residence in Arizona by A-I-R. Ritz asserts that "nature is the best designer" while tracing the progression of desert architecture. The book can be purchased at simonandschuster.com.
