DePaul Art Museum to close June 30, leaving 4,000-work collection in uncertainty amid university budget cuts

On February 26, DePaul University revealed its intention to shut down the DePaul Art Museum (DPAM) on June 30, despite an open letter signed by over 3,000 students and faculty opposing the move. Established in 1985 and housed in a $7.8 million LEED-certified facility, the museum is facing closure due to an anticipated budget shortfall of $27.4 million for 2026. Although Director Laura-Caroline de Lara has secured funding to keep the museum operational until June, the administration remains firm in its decision. The museum's collection features works by notable artists like Gertrude Abercrombie, Andy Warhol, and recent pieces from Yvette Mayorga. This closure has sparked concerns regarding the university's priorities, particularly in light of plans for a $42 million athletic complex.
