Delcy Morelos’s 30-tonne earthwork The Womb Space draws crowds in Mexico City

Colombian artist Delcy Morelos has created The Womb Space, a cavernous earthwork in Mexico City made of reddish soil, now in its ninth and final month. The 12-metre-high circular structure has become a word-of-mouth sensation, drawing visitors who lie on the ground to contemplate it. Morelos, known as the 'diva of dirt,' works with soil to evoke the earth’s life-sustaining and final resting qualities. The work is scented with clove and cinnamon. Morelos explains that she uses soil to connect with the earth’s breath and to challenge humanity’s poor treatment of it. The piece is set to cause a sensation in Britain, as Morelos will bring her enormous mud sculpture to the Barbican in London.
