De Young Museum Unveils Reimagined Indigenous American Art Galleries with Collaborative Approach

The de Young Museum in San Francisco has introduced its reimagined galleries dedicated to the Arts of Indigenous America, showcasing a fresh viewpoint on one of the nation's most important collections. Nearly 2,000 artifacts from North, Central, and South America are displayed in a vibrant arrangement that does not adhere to a strict timeline. The exhibition is organized into four distinct sections: Native California, Mesoamerican artifacts, ancient urban centers, and pieces from North America. Historical and contemporary art coexist, highlighting the ongoing nature of Indigenous artistic practices. This reinstallation involved collaboration with Indigenous advisors, including scholars and community members, to shift the narrative from mere historical artifacts to the connections between land, materials, and cultural knowledge. Since 1895, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, which encompasses the de Young Museum, has been acquiring works from the Americas. The revamped installation enhances this legacy by providing more detailed labels and encouraging viewers to engage with the art more thoughtfully over time.
