Davide Quadrio: il MAO di Torino ripensa il museo oltre l'Orientalismo

opinion-review · 2026-09-16

In a conversation with Segnonline, Davide Quadrio, the director of the MAO Museo d'Arte Orientale in Turin, shares insights about the museum's future. He argues that the concept of a modern museum is a Western construct driven by imperialistic needs, whereas in Asia, the establishment of museums has been postmodern and contemporary since the 1990s. The MAO reevaluates the museum's purpose by engaging with decontextualized objects from its religious and ritual collections. The exhibition featuring Chiharu Shiota, titled The Soul Trembles, is scheduled for late 2025 to mid-2026, promising to redefine the museum space. Additionally, Song Dong will be featured in October. Quadrio also critiques European centrality, emphasizing Asia's leadership in contemporary cultures, and the MAO is partnering with various museums to create a post-nationalist framework.
