David Zwirner Closes Upper East Side Gallery, Consolidates in Chelsea

institutional · 2026-07-20

David Zwirner has closed its branch at 34 East 69th Street, a townhouse gallery it operated since 2017. The departure follows Hauser & Wirth's exit from next door in 2023, when Manuela and Iwan Wirth sold their building for $10.5 million. Nara Roesler also left the block in 2020. A Zwirner spokesperson stated the closure was always planned once the Chelsea overhaul was complete; the Annabelle Selldorf–designed space at 525 West 19th Street has reopened after renovation. Zwirner now has a campus in West Chelsea with locations at 537 West 20th Street and 519, 525, and 533 West 19th Street, plus a Tribeca outpost rebranded as David Zwirner Tribeca. The firm also operates galleries in Los Angeles, London, Paris, and Hong Kong. The East 69th Street space hosted about three dozen exhibitions for artists including Yayoi Kusama, Bill Traylor, Dan Flavin, Sherrie Levine, Marcel Dzama, and P. Staff. The final show, "Set in Stone" in collaboration with Galerie Kugel, closed June 26. Meanwhile, uptown sees new activity: dealer Felix Rødder, Sprüth Magers, and Robert Simon are on East 80th Street; Opera Gallery opened on East 69th Street last year; and Sotheby's takeover of the Breuer Building has brought energy to the area.
