David Hockney Creates New Sunley Window for Turner Contemporary's 15th Anniversary

David Hockney has created a new Sunley Window for Turner Contemporary in Margate, marking the gallery's 15th anniversary this spring. The seven by ten metre work transforms the floor-to-ceiling window in the Sunley Gallery, overlooking Margate's beaches and the North Sea. This represents the first major exhibition of Hockney's work in Margate. The window depicts a Normandy sunrise, adapted from an iPad painting titled 27th April 2020, No. 1 that he made in 2020. Hockney produced this work while in Normandy, where he created numerous paintings responding to seasonal changes, weather, and light. His Normandy paintings have been celebrated for their immediacy, optimism, and attention to detail. The window installation celebrates the beginning of spring and demonstrates Hockney's ongoing engagement with digital technologies.
