Darren Almond's 'Fullmoon' Expanded Edition: 370 Moonlit Landscapes

Taschen has released an expanded edition of Darren Almond's photobook 'Fullmoon', featuring 370 images across 564 pages—110 more photographs and 164 additional pages than the 2014 original. The book compiles nearly 30 years of Almond's long-exposure landscapes shot under full moonlight, with exposure times of 15 minutes or more. The photographs, often with shallow depth of field and unconventional compositions, evoke Romantic painting traditions, particularly Caspar David Friedrich. Almond drew inspiration from landscape painters William Turner, John Constable, and Paul Cézanne, as well as explorers and writers like Robert Falcon Scott, Joseph Brodsky, Nostradamus, John Muir, and Charles Darwin. Locations range from Yosemite and Patagonia to Japan, the Eifel, Bermuda, the Alps, English heath, and Rügen. Almond represented Great Britain at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003, was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2005, and shortlisted for the Prix Pictet in 2014. The review notes that while the images are individually striking, the book's lack of sequencing and inclusion of near-identical 'doubles' makes it feel more like an inventory than a curated artistic statement.
