On the Archerfield Estate, located near North Berwick in East Lothian, Scotland, German architect Daniel Bär has finalized a courtyard house for clients Paul and Karen Richardson. This single-storey structure sits on a self-constructed site at King’s Cairn within the expansive 550-acre estate, which boasts a 17th-century mansion, golf amenities, and a spa. The L-shaped design incorporates floor-to-ceiling windows, fostering a protected microclimate. It utilizes materials such as handmade bricks, polished concrete, and steel copings, along with natural elements like timber and marble. The residence features a main living area, guest accommodations, an annex, and is tailored for multigenerational use, emphasizing sustainability with high insulation, passive solar design, and photovoltaic panels. The project has recently reached completion.
