Dancing the Revolution: From Dancehall to Reggaeton at MCA Chicago

The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago presents 'Dancing the Revolution: From Dancehall to Reggaeton,' curated by Carla Acevedo-Yates, featuring 40 artists from the Caribbean and its diaspora. The exhibition explores how Afro-Caribbean music genres like dancehall and reggaeton have sustained communities against postcolonial institutions and respectability politics. Works include Jack Sowah's silent video 'Sowah' (2025), Cosmo Whyte's mobile speaker system 'Sole Imperial (For Patrick Johnson)' (2019-2025), Josefina Santos's photographs 'Dominican Soundsystems' (2021), Awilda Rodriguez Lora's video 'Tortillera' (2019), Radamés 'Juni' Figueroa's immersive installation 'Karaoke el Nuevo Horizonte' (2026), and Edra Soto's 'BB Chairs' (2025) wrapped in Bad Bunny prints. The exhibition highlights autoethnographic documentation as a response to police violence and censorship, and includes queer representation challenging heteronormativity.
