Dakota Mace's First Solo Show at Higher Pictures Blends Diné Cosmology with Cameraless Photography

Higher Pictures in New York presents 'Sǫʼ Baa Hane’', the gallery’s first solo exhibition with Diné artist Dakota Mace. The show features nine works from 2023–2025 spanning two series, Sǫʼ and Distorted Landscapes. Mace employs cameraless photographic techniques—cyanotype, chemigram, and natural dyes like cochineal and Osage orange—alongside hand-applied glass beadwork inspired by Diné weaving and silversmithing. Her process-intensive practice translates Diné cosmology and oral history into visual narratives where design carries story. Land is treated not as a pictorial subject but as an archive of ancestral memory and kinship, resisting Western proprietary logic.
