Cristina Grappin: Architecture Through Context and Culture

Glocal Design Magazine's 89th edition, 'Visionarias del espacio,' features 15 female architects and interior designers expanding the conversation on architecture, design, and interiorism in Mexico, with cover art by Prince Láuder and Jimena Estíbaliz. Architect and interior designer Cristina Grappin, founder of Estudio Cristina Grappin in Mexico City's San Miguel Chapultepec neighborhood, emphasizes observation of how people live as the starting point for her work. Educated at Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey and Scuola Lorenzo dei Medici in Florence, she draws inspiration from global cultures. Her practice focuses on atmosphere-driven experiences, reflecting the identity of each environment. Grappin has overcome gender biases in a male-dominated field, leading projects in the United States, Spain, and Saudi Arabia. A notable project in Saudi Arabia required accommodating family gatherings of up to fifty people, with segregated social areas, interior courtyards, and latticed facades for privacy. She ended a long-standing partnership with Ezequiel Farca to establish her independent practice, aiming to make architecture more inclusive. Currently, she is developing a cultural museum in Veracruz, incorporating civic participation workshops and international collaboration. Her recent work explores raw materiality and natural light, creating contemplative spatial experiences.
