Contemporary art galleries face crisis as closures and downsizing mount
The contemporary art gallery sector is under pressure, with major closures and downsizing announcements. Pace Gallery, a mega-gallery with 7 locations, will reduce its represented artists from 135 to 80 and lay off 50 of 250 employees. Medium-sized galleries are hit hardest: recent closures include Clearing Gallery in Los Angeles, Sperone Westwater in New York, Rhona Hoffman in Chicago, Project Native Informant in London, Nir Altman in Munich, Galerie Francesca Pia in Zurich, and High Art in Paris. Marc Spiegler, former director of Art Basel, wrote in the New York Times that the art market hasn't grown as much as the art world's cultural influence, while costs have risen and a new collector class hasn't emerged. Galleries increasingly face competition from 'flippers' who treat art as investment and resell quickly at auction. Participation costs for art fairs are rising, forcing galleries to sell more works to break even. Some mega-galleries are downsizing: Lisson Gallery CEO Alex Logsdail told the Financial Times the gallery is not interested in opening new spaces unless closing another. Franco Broccardi, writing in Il Giornale dell'Arte, described a 'recalibration where size matters less than identity.' However, data from Art Basel's 2025 report shows that among 205 galleries surveyed, 25% announced closures but 42% announced openings. US gallery employment fell 4% in 2025, UK fell 3%, but numbers remain 10% above pre-pandemic levels.
