Contax's Rare 1000mm f/5.6 Lens from the 1970s Tested by Map Camera

Japanese photo retailer Map Camera, known for its sales charts, has tested the Contax Mirotar 1000mm f/5.6, an ultra-telephoto mirror lens from the 1970s. Only 22 units were made between 1976 and 1978, according to Leitz Photographica Auction, which sold one last year for €19,200 (about $22,400). The lens features integrated ND filters, rear color filters, and a wooden box. Map Camera notes that the lens cost around 4.7 million yen in the late 1970s, equivalent to nearly $30,000 today. With an f/5.6 aperture, it is fast for its focal length but weighs 36.4 pounds (16.5 kg) and is 16.5 inches long. Tested on a Sony a7R V, it was found to be tedious but optically sharp with good contrast and distinctive donut-shaped bokeh. The lens was part of Map Camera's 32nd anniversary Premium Collection and is listed as sold out.
