Conference on the State of Art Criticism in Italy Held at IULM University

The event titled 'Armi improprie. Lo stato della critica d’arte in Italia' took place at IULM University in Milan from April 27 to 28, 2023, under the curation of Vincenzo Trione. It aimed to tackle deficiencies in Italian art criticism, bringing together scholars, doctoral candidates, and researchers. The first day concentrated on criticism in print media, showcasing prominent figures from the 1960s and 1970s, including Annemarie Sauzeau and Gillo Dorfles. Subsequent discussions covered publishing, cultural policy, and artist-critics like Alberto Savinio. The second day featured critical texts, such as Trione's analysis of Argan's 'L’arte moderna 1770-1970,' along with conversations on art and philosophy. The conference highlighted the importance of art criticism, pointing out challenges like outdated publications and insufficient historical methodology. Johan & Levi will publish the proceedings.
