Community Dig on Scottish Isle Lismore Uncovers Medieval Monastery of International Importance
A significant early medieval monastery has been uncovered by a community-led excavation in Lismore, Scotland, as reported in the journal Antiquity. The project, spearheaded by archaeologist Clare Ellis, revealed a cemetery containing six burials from 650-1040 C.E., an early medieval cross slab, and traces of metalworking. Launched in 2016 by Lismore's historical society, the initiative received funding from local residents and various grants. Excavations adjacent to a 13th-century parish church also uncovered an oval structure from the seventh to tenth century, along with pottery, flint, and over 1,000 pieces of metalworking debris, such as molds and crucibles. Co-author Gordon Noble emphasized the monastery's significance, comparing it to Iona, and providing vital evidence for Lios Mòr, which was previously known primarily through texts.
