Comcast's Sky acquires ITV channels for US$2.13 billion

Sky, a subsidiary of Comcast, has reached an agreement to purchase ITV's free-to-air channels and streaming service for £1.6 billion (US$2.13 billion), thereby establishing the largest commercial broadcaster in the UK. This merger, revealed on Monday and corroborating a report by Reuters, merges the UK's leading free-to-air commercial broadcaster, known for the popular soap opera Coronation Street, with subscription-based television provider Sky. Dana Strong, CEO of Sky, described the acquisition as a "defining moment" for British broadcasting. Analysts indicate that this union would represent approximately 70% of the UK's linear television advertising market, including third-party contracts. As audiences increasingly favor streaming and digital content, traditional broadcasters are facing significant challenges. Regulators will now evaluate if the need for significant change justifies a more lenient approach to deal assessments.
