Collector's Polish Theater Poster Fades Due to Inadequate UV Protection

A collector's prized Polish theater poster for a production of Who Killed Virginia Woolf has completely lost its pink pigment after four years, demonstrating the critical importance of proper framing materials. The poster was acquired years ago during a trip to Cincinnati for the FotoFocus Biennial, where the collector developed an appreciation for Polish film posters' distinctive style that emerged despite Stalinist-era artistic restrictions. Framing expert Mitch Robertson of Toronto's Superframe explained that standard glass blocks only about 50% of UV light, while conservation-grade options offer 99% protection. Robertson emphasized that warm colors like red are particularly vulnerable to fading from sunlight exposure, and recommended choosing glazing with high UV filtration based on budget and display location. The collector now sometimes selects canvas paintings over works on paper to avoid framing costs, having learned that proper conservation requires investment beyond the initial artwork purchase.
