Collector Jochen Raiss Publishes 'Women in Trees' Book from Flea Market Finds

Photo collector Jochen Raiss has published a book titled 'Women in Trees' through Hatje Cantz, featuring vintage amateur photographs of women perched in trees. Raiss discovered the first image at a Frankfurt market years ago, which sparked a thematic collection. He began scanning the photos in early 2014, revealing details invisible to the naked eye. Raiss, who runs the Instagram handle @imperfekt.photography, is drawn to imperfect, everyday amateur photos that capture real lives. He sources many images from a Hamburg flea market where estate sales occur, noting the sadness of seeing entire households sold off. He also travels to other German markets, where dealers recognize him. Raiss observes that photos of women in trees outnumber those of men, attributing this to men being behind the camera in early amateur photography, with women posing.
