Cleveland Museum Acquires Rare Ancient Greek Stamnos by Kleophon Painter
The Cleveland Museum of Art has added a significant ancient Greek vase to its collection. Acquired in March 2023 and displayed in May, this red-figure stamnos dates to approximately 435–425 BCE and is attributed to the Kleophon Painter, an important Athenian artist active during the Periklean era. The vessel features a komos scene depicting musicians and revelers, with stylistic connections to Parthenon sculptures. Previously held by the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, this acquisition fills gaps in the museum's holdings, as it represents both a new shape and the first work by this painter in their collection.
