Classical Radio's Century: From Edison's Doubt to Global Cultural Force
In September 1926, Thomas Edison remarked to The New York Times that radio was merely a fad, foreseeing the resurgence of the phonograph. The following year, the BBC initiated broadcasts of the Proms, leading to the establishment of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. During World War II, private funding ensured the Proms continued, with Beethoven's Fifth Symphony representing triumph. In the United States, the New York Metropolitan Opera launched Saturday broadcasts in 1931, and the NBC Symphony Orchestra was formed under the direction of Arturo Toscanini. Marian Anderson's concert at the Lincoln Memorial in 1939 attracted an audience of 75,000. In 1967, the BBC Third Programme was rebranded as Radio 3. Significant events included JFK's assassination announcement on WGBH in 1963 and Apollo 8's transmission in 1968. Today, both state-funded and independent stations operate side by side.
