Christie's $5m Soulages Painting Allegedly Stolen from Estate

A lawsuit filed on Monday claims that a Pierre Soulages painting sold for $5 million at Christie's in November 2024 as part of the Weis collection sale was stolen from the estate of Marion Zeckendorf in the late 1970s. The painting, titled "Peinture 195 x 130 cm, 10 août 1956," was consigned by the Weis family, who acquired it in 1978. The plaintiffs, New York real estate moguls, allege that the work was taken without authorization from Zeckendorf's estate, where it had been on loan. Christie's has not commented on the litigation. The case highlights ongoing provenance disputes in the art market.
