Chris Blackwell's Memoir Chronicles Island Records' Role in Globalizing Reggae and Bob Marley's Career

Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, details in his autobiography how his label played a pivotal role in bringing Jamaican music to international audiences, particularly through his collaboration with Bob Marley. Born in London in 1937 to a wealthy Anglo-Jamaican family, Blackwell initially distributed jukeboxes across Jamaica, gaining insight into the island's segregated musical tastes. After a life-changing encounter with a Rastafarian at age 18, he developed deep connections with Jamaica's black community. In 1959, he established Island Records in Kingston's Hope Road area, initially focusing on ska recordings. The label's early success came with Millie Small's 1964 hit 'My Boy Lollipop.' Blackwell relocated to London in 1962 following Jamaica's independence, expanding his roster to include rock, blues, and folk artists like Steve Winwood and Nick Drake. His most significant achievement came in 1972 when The Wailers—Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, and Peter Tosh—approached him in London. Blackwell convinced Marley to incorporate rock elements into their reggae sound, leading to breakthrough albums like 'Catch A Fire' and 'Burnin'' that propelled Marley to global stardom. The memoir highlights Blackwell's non-commercial approach, his cross-cultural bridge-building, and his belief that Marley 'discovered' him rather than the reverse. Island Records was sold to Polygram in 1989 and is now part of Universal Music.
