Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui sentenced to 30 years for fraud

On Monday, Guo Wengui, a Chinese billionaire living in self-imposed exile, received a 30-year prison sentence in the United States for extensive financial fraud. In a Manhattan courtroom, Judge Analisa Torres mandated that he forfeit US$889 million in restitution, emphasizing that he had "preyed on those seeking to bring Democracy to China." His fraudulent actions impacted over 1,000 individuals globally, costing them hundreds of millions of dollars. Guo, who has been critical of the Communist Party since fleeing China a decade ago, claimed to be ill while in custody. He briefly mentioned his objective to "destroy the CCP," as the judge read letters from victims detailing their lost life savings and significant anxiety.
