China Unveils Record-Breaking Outdoor Escalator System in Wushan County

A new outdoor escalator system in Wushan County, Chongqing municipality, China, began operating on February 17, 2026. This transportation network, referred to as the 'Goddess' escalator, spans approximately 3,000 feet in length and ascends 800 feet vertically. It consists of 21 separate escalators, 8 elevators, 4 moving walkways, and multiple pedestrian bridges, with a complete journey taking about 21 minutes. Designed by engineer Huang Wei of China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group, the project was initiated in 2022 after officials considered various transit options for the mountainous area, known for its challenging terrain. Construction lasted four years at a cost of $23 million, with Swiss manufacturer Schindler producing the escalators. The system features a modular design with glass elements to reduce visual bulk and includes three observation decks overlooking the Yangtze River. Currently in a trial phase, the escalator charges 3 yuan per ride and serves around 9,000 daily passengers. This development is part of China's broader infrastructure initiatives, which also include other record-setting structures like the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge.
