China's First Fully AI-Generated Prime-Time Drama Debuts

Hunan Satellite Television, a prominent state-owned network, along with its streaming service Mango TV, has launched a fully AI-generated adaptation of the renowned Chinese novel 'Journey to the West,' comprising 30 episodes. This event marks a historic first for AI-generated dramas airing during prime time in China. Each episode lasts approximately 40 minutes, and the entire series was produced and broadcast within a remarkable three-month timeframe. The director has indicated that future episodes will be adjusted based on viewer responses. Following the premiere, the Chinese media and entertainment landscape experienced a notable impact, with shares of Mango Excellent Media reaching their 20% daily trading cap twice in the subsequent week, adding over 13 billion yuan (US$1.9 billion) to its market valuation. Guo Guo, a producer from a top film and television firm in Beijing, remarked, 'This sends a clear signal of policy support. AI drama is going mainstream.' This debut signifies a shift in production economics, as AI-generated content has the potential to lower costs and expedite production timelines, possibly revolutionizing drama creation in China.
