China's AI 'hundred model' war shifts to enterprise value, JPMorgan says

ai-technology · 2026-06-14

According to Alex Yao, who leads China equity research at JPMorgan, the AI sector in China is evolving from a chaotic competition among numerous models to a select few that can compete on a global scale. The emphasis has transitioned from mere technical prowess to generating tangible business outcomes. Yao pointed out that while Chinese AI models are slightly behind their leading US counterparts, this disparity does not significantly hinder domestic commercialization, given the limited access to US technologies and the necessity for practical application. He believes that once an AI model achieves the capability of a proficient master's graduate, it can effectively contribute to work. Emerging monetization strategies include ByteDance's launch of subscription tiers for its Doubao app in early May, priced between 68 yuan and 500 yuan monthly. Yao is also the co-head of Asia-Pacific technology, media, and telecoms research at JPMorgan.
