Chilean Artists Connect Atacama Desert and Mars Through Collaborative Exhibition

Artists Francisca García and Mario Navarro have created a collaborative exhibition titled 'Unearthed Conversation' that bridges terrestrial and extraterrestrial landscapes. Both artists were born in Santiago de Chile in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Their project draws inspiration from two distinct visual sources: the 1964 Chilean documentary film 'Aquí Vivieron' by Pedro Chaskel and Hìtor Ríos, and imagery captured by NASA's Perseverance Mars Rover since 2021. The documentary examines archaeological excavations of material remains from the Chango culture at the Loa River mouth in Chile's Atacama Desert. García and Navarro note the striking visual similarities between the desert's surface and Martian terrain. Through this exhibition, they establish connections between these two geographically distant locations, using visual materials to contemplate both historical narratives and future possibilities. The Atacama Desert serves as both primary subject and contextual backdrop for the presentation, functioning as a site that preserves traces of overlooked histories. These include archaeological discoveries related to the Chango culture. The exhibition creates a dialogue between planetary exploration and terrestrial archaeology, examining how different temporal perspectives intersect through visual documentation.
