Chieri's Historic Tabasso Factory Transforms into Cultural Hub Through PNRR-Funded Revitalization

The city of Chieri in Italy's Turin metropolitan area is redeveloping the former Tabasso textile factory, a 30,000-square-meter industrial site that closed in the 1990s after employing approximately 1,500 people. Architect Carlo Italo Zanotti designed the preliminary plan for the project, which is co-financed by Italy's PNRR recovery fund and the municipal government. The initiative aims to preserve historic elements like the 19th-century manufacturing building and chimney while creating new public spaces, pedestrian pathways, and cultural facilities including a Museum of the Territory. The first phase, budgeted at €11.8 million with €8.95 million from PNRR funds, targets completion by 2028 and will establish social services, coworking areas, and exhibition spaces. The transformation seeks to reconnect the previously degraded site with the urban fabric and celebrate Chieri's textile heritage through contemporary functions.
