Chicago's Arts Budget Cuts Contrast with New York's Record Funding

In the most recent budget cycle, Chicago stands out as the only one among the five largest U.S. cities to reduce funding for its local arts agency, while New York City has boosted its cultural budget to an unprecedented $323.8 million. The 2026 budget for Chicago allocated approximately $22.70 per person to the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), reflecting a 15% decrease. Mayor Brandon Johnson has defended the city's arts investments amid backlash regarding the exit of DCASE commissioner Clinée Hedspeth, postponed grant payments, and the cancellation of the African/Caribbean Festival of Life. Last year, DCASE distributed $10.8 million in grants, a significant drop from $22 million in 2023. New DCASE commissioner Kenya Merritt aims to enhance cultural activations. Illinois' state arts funding has remained stable under Governor JB Pritzker.
