Chicago Creative Sector Is City's Third-Largest Industry, Report Finds

A recent study on economic impact by Arts Alliance Illinois indicates that the creative sector in Chicago ranks as the city's third-largest industry, providing close to 213,000 jobs and generating an impressive $50 billion in economic output. This sector's direct employment constitutes more than 11% of the city's total workforce, outpacing educational services, retail, and manufacturing. For each dollar produced, an extra $0.38 is stimulated in local economic activity, contributing $5.7 billion in tax revenue each year. Funded by various organizations including the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, the analysis by Sound Diplomacy utilized 2023 data. Executive Director Claire Rice highlighted the importance of these findings in advocating for funding amid recent federal cuts to the arts. Additionally, Illinois's creative economy employs over 734,000 individuals and generates $148 billion in output, ranking it as the sixth-largest industry in the state. The study follows the Chicago Arts Census, which revealed that nearly two-thirds of arts workers earn less than $40,000 annually, while the average income in this sector stands at $106,226, largely influenced by high salaries in corporate and tech-related media, leaving many cultural workers with significantly lower earnings.
