Chemical tanker Asana seized off Yemen in suspected Somali pirate attack

On Friday, the British navy agency UKMTO reported that the Asana, a small chemical tanker with an unverified flag, was boarded by unauthorized individuals while navigating east in the Gulf of Aden, approximately 65 nautical miles south of Al Mukalla port in Yemen. Ship tracking data indicated that the tanker was headed for Bosaso, a port in Somalia. According to the British maritime risk management group Vanguard, information about the number of attackers, the circumstances surrounding the boarding, and the condition of the vessel and its crew remains uncertain. An official from the European Union's Aspides naval mission, which operates in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, confirmed that assistance efforts for the Asana were underway, noting the presence of a South Korean warship nearby. This incident raises alarms about piracy in the Horn of Africa.
