Cézanne's Radical Presence: A Philosophical Reflection on His Art

A recent exhibition at Fondation Beyeler in Basel brought together about 80 works by Paul Cézanne, including 58 oil paintings and 21 watercolors, from public and private collections across Switzerland, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark, and the United States. The show, which has now closed, prompted a philosophical reflection on Cézanne's approach to painting. Unlike European avant-gardes such as Futurism and Metaphysical Painting, which either accelerate toward the future or retreat into a timeless past, Cézanne's work is characterized by a radical commitment to the present. Drawing on Maurice Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology, the article argues that Cézanne's painting does not merely represent reality but attempts to capture its very emergence—"the birth of the landscape." His method involves a patient, almost ascetic attention to the visible world, reconstructing it as a system of solid relations without symbolic shortcuts. The article contrasts this with Italian avant-gardes, noting that both Futurism and Metaphysical Painting, despite their apparent opposition, share a difficulty in inhabiting the present. Cézanne's lesson, the author suggests, is particularly relevant today, in an age of digital acceleration and algorithmic projection, where the present is often evaded through fantasy or nostalgia.
