Cats' Food Aversion Linked to Olfactory Boredom in New Animal Behavior Study
A study published March 31 in Physiology & Behavior reveals that domestic cats lose interest in food due to olfactory habituation rather than satiety. Researchers at Iwate University in Japan conducted feeding experiments with 12 cats, observing that felines consumed less when repeatedly exposed to the same food smell across six feeding cycles. When offered different foods or novel odors, the animals ate significantly more. Study co-author Masao Miyazaki noted that cats' feeding motivation decreases as they become accustomed to food aromas, but can be restored by introducing new scents. This research explains why cats, descended from African wildcats that hunt multiple small prey daily, often leave food unfinished. Pet food researcher Scott McGrane from England's Waltham Petcare Science Institute confirmed these findings provide important insights into feline eating behavior. The study suggests varying meal types or introducing different odors can maintain cats' food intake.
