Carlo Ratti's 'Objectify' Column Celebrates the Ephemeral Beauty of Beach Buckets and Spades

In a summer series for Wallpaper*, architect Carlo Ratti examines Italy's ordinary objects, focusing on the plastic bucket and spade as tools of creative destruction. He notes that no architecture firm matches the volume of construction along the Italian coast each summer, built by children with tools costing less than an espresso. The design, an anonymous midcentury creation, is produced in the industrial North by companies like Androni Giocattoli using injection-moulding presses. Ratti praises the bucket's simplicity: a negative mould that forms sandcastles, with a slight taper for easy release. He contrasts this ephemeral play with society's obsession with permanence, calling the sandcastle a 'seaside mandala' whose value lies in the joy of making, not longevity. The column is part of 'Objectify', a series published weekly in Il Sole 24 Ore, aiming to highlight less glamorous Italian objects. Ratti, who directs CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and the Senseable City Lab at MIT, also teaches at Politecnico di Milano and directed the 19th International Architecture Exhibition at La Biennale di Venezia in 2025.
